Workshops Available
1. Medical Communications (Standardized Patient Program, U of M)
Being a doctor requires good communication skills. You need to communicate with patients, their family, and other staff members clearly in order to get the job done. Kevin Hsiao and Julia Markey, employees at the Standardized Patient Program at the University of Michigan Medical School, use an interactive role-playing activity to have highschoolers understand not only the importance of communication in the workplace, but how to do it well.
2. Community Activism (Roland Hwang, Former Assistant Attorney General)
Roland Hwang is both the former Assistant Attorney General of Michigan and the Vice President of the American Citizens for Justice Program. His goal will be to teach students the importance of speaking up and being active in the community. In this interactive workshop, he will allow students to find problems on which they would like to act. These students will learn how to form a plan and accomplish a goal.
3. Working Together with Others (Karen Kerry, dentist, and Brad Chick, PTO President)
The most important skill in the workplace is the ability to work with others. Karen Kerry and her husband, Brad Chick will host a partner role-playing activity where they will demonstrate this skill. They believe that it is vital for people to find partners with whom they can work together, have fun together, and/or live together.
4. Service and Leadership in College (U of M Rotaract)
Rotaract is Interact at the college level. Rotaract's board members are going to host a workshop to teach college-bound students how to stand out and have fun in college while still working hard academically. They will allow students to be able to understand what it is like to be a college student and what types of opportunities await you in college.
5. Journalism (Mary Morgan, Ann Arbor Chronicle)
The publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle with her husband, Mary Morgan takes the time to host a workshop for people who are aspiring journalists or people who want their voice heard through writing in the community. Writing is a skill that is vital for getting your voice out and into the world. Students will learn how to express themselves, their beliefs, and their concerns clearly.
6. Speech and Communications (Frances Kai-Hwa Wang, Writer, and Al Storey, Professor of Speech and Communications, U of M)
Frances Kai-Hwa Wang is not only the editor of an online magazine, but she is also a well known public speaker in the city of Ann Arbor. She often gives talks at the University of Michigan, the Ann Arbor Public Library, and other places in town on her family and culture. She will teach students how to be heard, to express themselves without feeling the need to shy away. Al Storey is a a proud Rotarian as well as the Professor of Speech and Communications at the University of Michigan. He has spoken at past Interact meetings and has agreed to come back. Many Interact members have asked for him and we have finally gotten him back. He is informative but is also a lot of fun.
